Spaying (Ovariohysterectomy) Female Dogs - Get your female spay because she never have puppy

What is surgical sterilization in the female

In females, spaying is usually to remove the ovaries, operation called ovarectomy.

The vet just go through the flanks or abdomen to practice this intervention.

In some cases the veterinarian will make an even more radical and he practiced one (ovario-hysterectomy to remove everything).

With this operation, the dog is protected from risks of metritis or pyometra, which is very low risk anyway, because the bitch is sterilized.

There are actually three types of surgery to spay your female dog

  1. Ovarectomy
  2. Hysterectomy
  3. Tubal Ligation- have the tubes tied.
  4. (This procedure does not remove the heat)
The consequences of spaying/neutering depend on the behavior of each dog individual.

Diseases that prevents spaying/neutering

Sterilization (spaying - neutering) protects your dog from several diseases caused by the action of sex hormones.

A big increase in the secretion of these hormones can cause serious health problems.

  • Ovarian cysts

  • Rarely cancerous, these cysts cause increased secretion of hormones, which promotes the development of uterine infection called pyrometer (see below for details)

  • Breast tumors

  • Mammary tumors are very common in dogs and 50% of them are they are cancerous .
Older dogs, not spayed are at greatest risk.

NOTE: The probability of having a breast tumor is reduced by 99% if the dog is spay / neuter before her first heat.

  • The pyometra

  • it is a very serious condition which induces kidney problems and infection of the abdomen when the uterus has to break.

This condition is characterized by the accumulation of discharge in the uterus.

This disease is very difficult to treat and the best way is the removal of the uterus and ovaries.

NOTE: If pyometra is diagnosed late, the dog may have peritonitis but also extremely serious kidney infection.

  • Canine false pregnancy - Pseudocyesis

  • The false pregnancy is a hormonal problem that once had a utility in dogs.

In the packs of wild dogs, only the dominant pair has the right to reproduce.

When the dominant dog female have babies , the other female in the packs of dogs get involved with the puppies and give them milk.

False pregnancy is actually a hormonal response that allows dogs to produce milk without real labor and delivery of puppies.

Nowadays, this kind of thing is not necessary anymore but the little female dog still have it in their genes and they still get times to times, false pregnancy without reason. That can cause them breast infection because breast milk is not giving to any puppies and stay inside the female.

usually treatment is unnecessary as false pregnancy resolves within 3 weeks.
We can put warm compresses on the breasts. but we have to try to manipulate the breast as less as possible... because any touching of the mammary tissue is what stimulates milk production, so it is important to minimize tactile stimulation. If the female is licking herself, she may need an Elizabethan collar to minimize stimulation.

  • Diabetes

  • Sterilization helps control diabetes that is difficult to control when there are sex hormones that are released.

Finally, know that a spayed bitch tend to live longer than a bitch that has not been spay because it has fewer health problems.
