HEALTHY DIET FOR YORKSHIRE TERRIER
|
The Yorkshire terrier has to take 2 to 3 small meals a day. Since it is very small, specialy the teacup ones,it is better to distribute its food intake to avoid hypoglycemia. (See below)
WHAT TYPE OF FOOD
Dry food bites or kibble.
Personally I also left permanently to my dogs rawhide bones to chew and all my dog 3 never had tooth problem or tartar, so it must be very effective for dog's dental care!
Puppies need richest food during their growth period. Lactating bitches also need a diet richer than normal.
QUANTITY OF FOOD
It is sometimes difficult to follow the guidelines provided by the manufacturer of dog food bag ... because they do not often provide informatios and quantities to use for ultra small dogs.
You must make yourself calculating proportions according to the weight of your dog.
For a 2kg (about 5lbs) dog, it is recommends to give a daily ration of 4-5 ounces (110-140 g)
NEVER CHANGE THE KIND OF FOOD SUDDENLY
If you want to change the kind of food of your little yorkie, you have to to it gradually.
Introduce the new food slowly over a period of 8 to 10 days. If you don't do it that way, your little dog will have a high risk of developping digestive problems .... like high diarrhea... This will not be pleasant either for you or for your beloved Yorkie.
TO HAVE A NICE SHINY HAIR
Although they are tiny dog, the Yorkshire terriers are dogs that have A LOT OF HAIR!
If you want this hair to be beautiful and shiny, you must use quality products when you wash your yorkie.
Another factor, and I would say even more important than the first, is crucial to have wonderful hair:

Food recommended to improve the coat:
(This is the Food i give to my beloved yorkies!)
Natural Choice ... very good for the hair, coat of yorkshire terrier as it contains flax oil that's very good for the dog.
(I tried several brand because my yorkie female named Mimi had very sensitive and dry skin, that was causin itching but since she eats the natural choice food. ... Everything is great .... Her hair is shiny and his skin is soft and teh best part: no more itching!!!)
You should give 3 meals a day when the yorkie still puppy and you can cut it to 2 times/day for adult yorkie fully grown.
The Yorkie is a very small dog and very energetic so he can suffer from low blood sugar level and then have hypoglycemia crisis if he is not fed regularly, especially when they are puppy.
WATCH OUT for hypoglycemia crisis
The smallest yorkie , like teacup ou puppy have to be monitored closely. ... If you seethat your yorkie suddenly have no more energy and faint, almost dead, he does not response when you touch him ...
this is a emergency and you have to act quickle, introduce food or vitamin in the mouth of your yorkie to help raise up his blood sugar, it could save his life.
You have to be more vigilant after playing a lot. ... hypoglicemia crisis usually suddendly happen when yorkshire terrier spend a lot of energy and play a lot.
Be sure that your yorkie have always access to fresh water. These little dogs are playing a lot and drink a lot of water!
FOOD table
For some of us, it can sometimes be very difficult to resist the cute face of our yorkie when they watch us eat and seem to be so hungry!
The Yorkies are truly expert in the art of looking hungry...little manipulator!
One day after I gave them their meals, I bring my little dogs to my parent's place and leave them their for few hours ...
My dogs look at my parents a way that they look that they were starving so my mother was sure they did not eat before coming to her place.
She gave them another meal .....and believe it or not, they ate everything in seconds...these little pigs!
