LIST OF COMMON HEALTH PROBLEMS IN YORKSHIRE TERRIER (YORKIE'S HEALTH )

  • Dental tartar
  • Retained deciduous baby teeth
  • Patellar luxation/Luxating Patella
  • Tracheal collapse
  • Tracheal collapse
Tracheal collapse is commonly seen in small breed dogs as the Yorkshire Terrier.

    What is the trachea
The trachea is a tube that allows passage of air from the throat to the lungs.

This flexible duct is therefore related to upper respiratory tract (nose, mouth, ..) with the respiratory internal (bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli).

In dogs, the trachea is composed of cartilaginous rings C-shaped interconnected by an annular ligament.

Dorsally, the open side of the ring is completed by the dorsal tracheal muscle.
The larynx is the gateway of the trachea and prevents food and water from entering the trachea.

Tracheal collapse is caused by a progressive weakening of the tracheal rings.
During Tracheal collapse, the tracheal back muscle collapseson itself during breathing. This therefore causes an obstruction to airflow in the trachea. The dog eventually choke.

    SYMPTOMS
The first symptoms can begin from the age of one year OLD.

  • dry hacking cough occurs when the dog plays, is excited and pull on his collar.
  • Cough is frequently aggravated by hot weather, stress and excitement.

  • In time, more the disease get worse, the cough becomes more frequent, even if the dog makes little effort.

  • In severe cases, wheezing and breathing becomes difficult, even Fainting can occur from lack of oxygen.

  • Exercise intolerance

  • narrowing of the trachea may even be visible at the entrance on the chest radiograph in inspiration

  • Eventually cough irritates the larynx, which has the effect of making your little dog cough even more!

  • Diagnosis is made with radiographs where the profile of the trachea appears with a variable size between the throat and the lung environment and different depending on whether it is inspiration or expiration.

On expiration , the rings of the trachea takes the form of a U open.
On inspiration , the rings of the trachea takes the form of a 0 crashed.

TIP: When your dog has a Tracheal collapse CRISIS, blocking the nostrils for a few moments can sometimes help him. Indeed, in many cases, the dog take air through the mouth and re-open his tracheal tube almost automatically.
Repetitive cough also have the effect of making the Pulmonary alveoli explode, which heal, losing their elasticity and their permability. oxygen carbon dioxide exchange becomes more difficult, which can lead to chronic bronchitis and emphysema sometimes. But we are talking about If the disease is really advanced.

    SOLUTION/TREATEMENT
Several things are recommended to decrease the Tracheal collapse problem in Yorkshire terrier or other small breed dogs.

The goal here is to prevent the development of cough.
  • weight loss: fat that slips at the entrance to the chest and pulls the trachea is a major cause of deterioration.
  • Use a harness instead of a collar when you walk your dog. When the dog pulls on his leash and has a collar, it triggers a cough.
  • Limit excitement because it triggers the cough
  • Calming dog during a crisis: it can be very scary for your pet's when his throat is choking (some dogs may even faint)
  • Avoid hot environments
  • Give cartilage boosters to your dog,in tracheal collapse, it is the cartilage rings that loses its rigidity so we can use the same products that fight against osteoarthritis.
  • Take good care of the dental hygiene of your little York, if the tartar accumulate, the tonsils will become inflamed and will make your dog cough.
  • if prescribed, Use cough inhibitors
  • if prescribed use antibiotics if prescribed
  • if prescribed Use short-acting corticosteroids
  • if prescribed Use bronchodilators

  • Management of Advanced Tracheal Collapse in

    -Surgical treatment is indicated.

The surgery involves the placement of sutures on plastic rings placed around the trachea.

When this treatment is not feasible (including chest collapse or high grade), another treatment is to place a self-expanding structure modeled on the trachea and custom made in the trachea. It is placed endoscopically. The disadvantage is the cost of this prosthesis.
